DIABETES

There are 13.5 million people in the United States who suffer from diabetes (5% of the population). Of these, one third are children who must cope everyday with a complex and frustrating disease. Emotional upset in dealing with diabetes may be the greatest challenge children face. All children need love, affection AND treats on special occassions.

CARBOHYDRATES

Research shows that the human body was intended to handle sugar only in the dilute amounts in which it appears in fruits, berries and vegetables. Your selection of carbohydrates should be from natural COMPLEX carbohydrates such as grains, vegetables and fruits. It SHOULD NOT be from SIMPLE carbohydrates such as sugar, honey, molasses or corn syrup.

Refined sugar contains 770 WORTHLESS calories per cup. NO VITAMINS - NO MINERALS - NO PROTEIN - NO FIBER - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

      SUGAR (ANTI-NUTRIENT?)

All carbohydrates require vitamin B-1 and other nutrients to be metabolized by the body. Since sugar has had all the VITAMINS, MINERALS, PROTEINS AND FIBER REMOVED IN THE REFINING PROCESS, it must extract these nutrients from the body, DEPLETING THE BODY'S SUPPLY.

Natural COMPLEX carbohydrates such as those found in grains, fruits and vegetables CONTAIN THEIR OWN SUPPLY of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber and DO NOT DEPLETE the body's supply of these precious nutrients

BALANCED DIET

The human body requires a BALANCED intake of carbohydrates, protein and fat to function properly. Eliminating too many foods from the diet is DANGEROUS. Registered dietitians stress that reducing - NOT ELIMINATING - favorite foods which contain fat is the best approach. We encourage you to enjoy your sugar free bakery within the guidelines of a balanced diet.

FACTS ON FAT

Fat is an ESSENTIAL PART of a healthy diet because it is a PRIMARY SOURCE of fat-soluble vitamins such as A,D,E, and K. In addition, FAT IS NECESSARY in making hormones, digesting and absorbing nutrients and maintaining healthy cell membranes. Of your daily fat intake, 2/3 should be from vegetable and plant sources (unsaturated) and 1/3 from animal sources: meat, poultry, fish and dairy products (saturated).

There are many lo-fat or fat free bakery items on the market, but none are suitable for people with sugar sensitivities. Both fat and sugar act as tenderizers in bakery products. As manufacturers take out fat, they increase the amount of sugar to maintain tenderness. The result is a virtual SUGAR BOMB for diabetics.

CHILD BEHAVIOR

Sugar is a suspected culprit in HYPERACTIVITY in children and, it dosen't take much; less than two teaspoons can easily result in hyperactive behavior. According to a study published in the Journal of Behavioral Ecology, hyperactive behavior in children becomes markedly worse after high-sugar snacks or meals.

READING FOOD LABELS

Diabetics should be aware that all of the following are classified as SUGAR by the FDA in food products: glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, sugar, brown sugar, beet sugar, maple sugar, honey, molasses, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, maltose, levulose, corn syrup solids, concentrated fruit juice, and other ingredients containing sugar (i.e. jams and jellies). Many manufacturers use a NUMBER OF THESE in the same product so BEWARE, look for all the ingredients and you'll be amazed at how much SUGAR some products contain.
